The Bozeman Public Library offers more than just a vast selection of books, periodicals, and movies to its many pass-holders. The staff is excited to host a number of live music and other events throughout the month. So when you’re not getting lost in the stacks, come check out one of these fun events at your community sponsored Library.
The Friends of the Library is pleased to welcome Robert Staffanson, author of Witness to Spirit: My Life with Cowboys, Mozart & Indians, as the guest speaker for the Annual Friends Membership Meeting on Friday, January 22nd. The evening will begin with a book signing at 6:30pm in the Community Room. The author will read passages from his book, answer questions from the audience, and will be joined by fellow author Todd Wilkinson, who penned the introduction. For more information, contact Erin Mock, Friends Coordinator, at 582-2433. “The Life and Music Of Django Reinhardt” brings back the Library’s Exploring the Arts program on Monday, January 25th at 7pm in the Community Room.
Django Reinhardt was a Gypsy guitarist who was Europe’s most famous jazz musician during the 1930s, inventing a style of music that came to be called ‘gypsy jazz.’ The program will feature performances of Django Reinhardt’s compositions along with the fascinating history behind them, presented by Montana Manouche, a Bozeman gypsy jazz quartet. This program is sponsored by the Foundation and is free and open to the public.
Yoga for All continues Tuesdays in January with upcoming dates the 19th & 26th. The classes are held from 11-1:45am and 12-12:45pm in the Large Community Room. The morning class is taught by accomplished yoga instructor Karen Averitt and the noon class by local mom and yoga instructor Jen DuCharme. The weekly classes are for moms, dads, or caregivers who like to bring their baby or babies or for anyone in the community who wishes to attend. The morning class tends to have more kids, following Books & Babies, but all are welcome to either class. Please bring your own mat. A new exhibit of paintings by Livingston, Montana, artist Sheila Hrasky will be on display in the Atrium Gallery through February 29th, kicking off the Library’s 2016 Artist’s Series. A plein air and studio painter, Hrasky has been focused on taking a subject, whether a landscape or a life figure, and then deconstructing, reshaping and re-contextualizing it through classic shapes of musical instruments, expressing light, energy and motion. Inspired by Kandinsky and Picasso’s cubist style, music has become a very important part of Hrasky’s recent work. “The biggest reward is watching the work unfold,” she says, “Day after day I push myself as a painter to create new images. Developing my own way of painting has taken many years to refine.” The exhibition will be on display during Library hours. A percentage of sales will go to the Foundation to ensure continuation of cultural programs at the Library for public benefit. For more information about the exhibit or opening reception, please call Sarah DeOpsomer at 582-2425 or e-mail programs@bozemanlibraryfoundation. Call for Artists announced.
