SUMMARY:Tracing Trade Networks Through Obsidian Sourcing: An African Case Study in Relation to Montana and Beyond with Annya Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:Elise R. Donohue Lectures on the American West in Memory of Walter Rosenberry Presents | Tracing Trade Networks Through Obsidian Sourcing: An African Case Study in Relation to Montana and Beyond with Annya Jacobs\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, March 13\, 2025\nat 5:30pm – 7:00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObsidian is a multifunctional tool that provides precise data regarding the archaeological record. By analyzing this unique inorganic material\, archaeologists can track trade routes where the obsidian was trafficked and\, in effect\, help explain the possible social networks between territories. MOR’s Registrar and Collections Manager of Cultural History Annya Jacobs will focus on an African case study tracing trade routes from Egypt down the Red Sea to Ethiopia. We will examine this model and compare it to obsidian sourcing in Montana and North America. \nJoin us for an enlightening public lecture series that delves into the rich tapestry of Western history and explores the invaluable lessons it offers for our present-day world. Through engaging talks by historians and scholars\, we will examine key events\, movements\, and figures shaping Western civilization. After the lecture\, there will be a meet-and-greet with the evening’s speaker and light refreshments. \n5:30 p.m.| Hager Auditorium\nIncluded with membership\, $5/non-member\nRSVP suggested via this link
