Montana Food Bank Network and Feeding America kick off Hunger Action Month, a 30 day effort to bring awareness to the startling reality that 1 in 7 Montanans struggle to put food on their table.
“Hunger impacts every community in our nation, preventing millions of families, seniors and children from thriving,” said Matt Knott, President of Feeding America. “This September, we all have a chance to make a difference in the lives of people in need by getting engaged and raising awareness of this very important cause. With the collaborative efforts of the public, private and charitable sector, we can solve this issue.”
Throughout the month of September, the Montana Food Bank Network has joined forces with several local businesses and organizations to encourage state-wide participation in bringing awareness to this issue in Montana. In correlation with MFBN’s Feed Montana campaign, a series of events are taking place for Montanans to get involved with this campaign in unique and social ways.
1. Connect with the Montana Food Bank Network and hundreds of volunteers expected to volunteer throughout Montana this month. Learn more about the Montana Food Bank network and how you can get involved. Visit mfbn.org/volunteer to get started or learn more.
2. Join Spoontember and the activities scheduled throughout September. From UM Griz games to local Pint Nights to “Marooning out” the M on Mount Sentinel in conjunction with UM Homecoming Week; there are several opportunities to get family and friends involved in this cause. For a full schedule of events visit mfbn.org/hungeractionmonth. For further involvement, supporters can use the spoons provided at each event to take a ‘spoon selfie’ of themselves attempting to balance a spoon on their nose. Supporters can then spread awareness about hunger in Montana by posting their spoon selfie to social media along with #Spoontember and challenge their friends and family to do the same.
3. Donate to the Feed Montana campaign at feedmt.org or to Montana Food Bank Network at mfbn.org, both proceeds go directly to Montana communities to help fight hunger in Montana. For every $1 that is donated MFBN is able to provide enough food for 3 meals.
4. Advocate for the 1 in 7 Montanans that go to sleep with a rumble in their tummy. Sign up for our newsletter, watch for our action alerts, call your senators and let them know that too many Montanans do not have the food they need to thrive and only together we can Feed Montana.
With a network of over 200 partner agencies, the mission of the Montana Food Bank Network is to end hunger in Montana through food acquisition and distribution, education and advocacy. Through our partner agencies we are able to distribute over 8 million pounds of food throughout the state of Montana. We strive every day to get more food to Montanans in need.
