Get lost in stacks of September library events
The Bozeman Public Library is not only your one-stop reference stop, but also hosts a number of public events for those of all ages and interests. Here’s what’s coming up in September: One Book–One Bozeman.
Join the community and MSU Freshmen as we all read the imminently readable book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot on Wednesday, September 9th from 6:30-8:00pm. Delve into the ethics behind, and difficulties of, medical research and harvested human cells in this fascinating true story of Mrs. Lacks’ “HeLa” cells. Skloot’s book beautifully and exhaustively researches the story of how the cultured cells were discovered and what the effects were on the Lacks family–both at the time and 20 years later when it came to light. It was published to great acclaim in 2010 and remained on the New York Times’ bestsellers list for two years. This event encourages the community to read a common book, bringing people together for meaningful discussions and building community relationships. This is the 8th year of the program, hosted by the Bozeman Public Library Foundation in partnership with Montana State University. Various community members and entities such as Bozeman High School and Bozeman Deaconess Hospital will be a part of the discussion, with panel discussions and seminars happening in September.
For more information, please contact Paula Beswick at director@bozemanlibraryfoundation.org or 582-2426.
A number of community discussions will follow One Book–One Bozeman, covering related topics that affect people throughout this area and beyond. These include: Cell Research and the Ethics Behind It on Friday, September 11th from 12-1:30pm; Race and Poverty in the Time of Henrietta Lacks and Race and Poverty Here and Now regarding the history, policy, and ethics surrounding this book with Racial Equity Montana on Monday, September 14th from 7-9pm; and Business, Legal, and Ethical Aspects of Cell Research, a panel discussion with local experts, on Monday, September 21st from 7-9pm. All group discussions will be held in the Large Community Room. The Library will host an Art Opening Reception for Jelani Mahiri, exhibiting his “Skin of Bozeman” photographs in the Atrium Gallery through October. The public is invited to join him and the Library Foundation for an art opening reception on Friday, September 11th from 6-7:30pm. “The series depicts aspects of Bozeman in a more abstract manner,” said Mahiri, “exploring the effects of time, color, and texture on our perception of and feels for urban landscapes.”
His Bozeman series is not intended to represent the city in a broad manner, but to offer a single point of view on some of our town’s hidden beauties. Mahiri has been taking photographs since he was 16 in his hometown of Chicago. He has degrees in Physics and Spanish, and later earned an MA and PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Univ. of Cal, Berkeley where he renewed his exploration in photography throughout the San Francisco area. He currently lives in Bozeman. For more information on the exhibit, purchasing a piece, or about the reception, please contact Sarah at 582-2425.
Cinema Circus West will come to the Library on Saturday, September 12th from 2-5pm. This event will featire a circus on the front Plaza, performers under the Big Top, and film shorts in the Large Community Room.
Come have some Coffee with a Cop on Thursday, September 17th from 9:30-11am. Join members of the Bozeman Police for an informal chat over a cup of Lindley Perk coffee at the Library. This is the second community coffee hosted by the Police to provide a way for the community to meet the officers in a friendly encounter. Have a pressing, but non-emergency question you’d like to ask? Or maybe just want the opportunity to have a conversation with an officer? Come on down and see how our finest in blue are working for us.
And finally, Yoga For All runs throughout the month, but is back to two sessions every Tuesday at 11-1:45am and 12-12:45pm in the Large Community Room of the Library. The morning class is taught by accomplished yoga instructor Turi Hetherington and the noon class by local mom and yoga instructor Jen DuCharme. The weekly classes are for moms, dads, or caregivers who like to bring their baby or babies or for anyone in the community who wishes to attend. The morning class tends to have more kids, following Books & Babies, but all are welcome to either class. The classes are free, but please bring your own mat.
